Getting Extra 2 Units of Credit Under CP3108A/B

This scheme is being tried for the first time and subject to approval at various admin layers.

Objective: To give CS2103/T students the option to earn 2 extra units of course credits under CP3108A/B, for doing some of the optional (but strongly recommended) CS2103/T work.

Process:

  • Student who opt-in enroll in CP3108A/B concurrently with CS2103/T.
  • Enrolled students do the CS2103/T tasks that can be counted for CP3108A/B. The teaching team monitors and grade the work.
  • Those who completes the work get 2 Units of course credit under CP3108A/B.

CP3108A (2 Units) and CP3108B (4 Units) are Independent Study Courses (ISC), graded CS/CU.

Eligibility:

  • If you have not done CP3108A or CP3108B, you can take this option to earn credit under CP3108A.
  • If you have done CP3108A before but not CP3108B, you can enroll to 'upgrade' your CP3108A to CP3108B, adding two more Units of course credit.
  • If you have done CP3108B already, you are not eligible to take this option.

Workload:

Period Task If taking CS2103/T only
W1-W5 Do at least 80% of the Git-Mastery exercises that are marked as compulsory, and ensure progress tracking feature is enabled. Optional,
strongly recommended
W3-W4 Complete parts 1-4 and at least half of part 5 of the JavaFX tutorial. first 4 are necessary for the iP anyway, 5th is optional
W4-W6 Do at least 4 optional iP increments A-Checkstyle [W4], A-CI [W5], A-BetterGui [W6], A-Personality [W6], A-MoreErrorHandling [W6], A-MoreTesting [W6].
You may use AI to do these.
At least 2 optional increments are 'required'
W6-W7 Do 2 out of 3 AB3 tutorials 1 required, the rest optional
W2-W10 Learn basics tools Gradle, Checkstyle, Codecov, Codex, PlantUML, an IDE Most are necessry for the course projects anyway

Note: The CP3108A/B deadline for each task is the same as its deadline for CS2103/T.

Benefits of taking this option:

  • You earn 2 extra course credits. If you anticipate your workload will be heavy this semester, this allows you to drop another 4-unit course to reduce the total load.
  • Most of the work required for CP3108A/B is 'necessary' (if not compulsory) for CS2103/T anyway. For example, you need to do the JavaFX tutorial to learn JavaFX before you use JavaFX in the two projects. So, most of the work listed above are not really "extra" work.

Cautions:

  • Your actual workload will increase slightly if you don't drop another course to make room.
So, if you are overloaded already, and you do not wish to drop any of those courses, it may be better not to take this option.
  • If you don't complete the required work, you will get a CU grade.

Grading: Will be done by the CS2103/T teaching team, as part of CS2103/T. No extra report submission is needed.

Enrolling:

  1. Submit the Extra 2 Units Under CP3108A -- Opt in/out Form. Deadline: Week 1 Wednesday
  2. Wait till we confirm enrollment status (don't drop any courses until your enrollment is confirmed).

FAQ Can I opt in now and withdraw later?
A: Yes, you need to write to UG office with the request, before the normal deadline with dropping courses.

FAQ Can I do the work this semester and claim CP3108A/B credit in a later semester?
A: No, this special arrangement is only if you do the two courses in parallel.
